Renew Iranian Passport in Canada

Key Point: No Iranian Embassy in Canada

Canada does not currently have an Iranian embassy or consulate. Therefore, passport services for Iranian citizens in Canada are handled through the Interests Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which operates out of the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington, D.C.

General Steps for Passport Renewal

  1. Use the Mikhak System: The first and most critical step is to register and complete your passport application through the online "Mikhak" system, which is a platform by Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for consular services. You will need to fill out the application and upload the required documents. Upon completion, you will receive a tracking code.

  2. Gather Required Documents: The documents typically required for passport renewal include:

    • The tracking code from the Mikhak system.

    • Your original Iranian birth certificate (Shenasnameh). For individuals over 15, the birth certificate must have a photo.

    • Your original national ID card (if you have one).

    • Your original Iranian passport.

    • Proof of your military service status (for men). This can be a completion/exemption card. Men over 50 years old are typically exempt from this requirement.

    • Recent colour photos (4x6 full face with a white background). Women must wear a headscarf (hijab).

    • Proof of your Canadian residency (e.g., residence permit card).

    • The payment receipt for the renewal fee.

  3. Submit the Application: After getting your tracking code and gathering your documents, you will need to submit them to the Iranian Interests Section in Washington, D.C. It is often possible to send documents by post, but you should contact the section to confirm their procedures and coordinate the process.

Specific Considerations

  • Military Service (for men): For Iranian men, completing or being exempt from military service is a key requirement for passport renewal. Specific forms may need to be filled out depending on your situation.

  • Women and Minors: For women and children, additional permissions may be required. For example, a woman may need an agreement form signed by her husband. For a minor's passport, the father or legal guardian must apply through the Mikhak system.

  • Dual Nationality: Iran does not recognize dual nationality. If you are a dual Canadian-Iranian citizen, you must use your Iranian passport to enter and exit Iran. Be aware that authorities may confiscate your foreign passport.

  • Processing Time: The process can take several weeks, so it is important to apply well in advance of your passport's expiration date.

Important Note

The information provided is a general guide. It is essential to consult the official websites of the Iranian Interests Section in Washington, D.C. and the Mikhak system for the most current and specific instructions, forms, and fees. The requirements can be subject to change, so always verify the latest information directly with the responsible authority.
